A “day of rage” counterdemonstration planned by democracy activists failed to materialize. The turnout at Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square was a fraction of the one million predicted. And with thunder clouds hanging overhead, a scheduled four-hour event was cut in half. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s nationally televised anniversary address lasted little more than five minutes. It was largely a patriotic appeal for support of construction of a massive dam that is challenging Egypt’s long-standing monopoly over the Nile River waters. The controversial $5 billion hydropower project is being financed almost entirely with domestic funds in the absence of support from international lending institutions. Man sentenced for seeking sex with Clinton Co. 13-year-old

A man who confessed to similar acts was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to traveling to Clinton County, Iowa to have sex with a minor. Ananas Berhanu Getachew, 28, of Bloomington, Minnesota will also serve five years of supervised released following his prison term and he will have to register as a sex offender. Police said in July 2010, Getachew chatted online with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl. Getachew traveled from his home to Clinton County to meet the “girl” for sex July 29, 2010. The girl was actually an undercover Clinton County, Iowa detective. Getachew was arrested when he arrived in Clinton County. Police said Getachew immediately admitted to traveling to meet a girl for sex. Police said Getachew told them he “had engaged in sexual chats with other minors, and he was glad police arrested him before he succeeded in having a sexual encounter.” Source ( WQAD.Com)

Preacher says world will actually end in October

Harold Camping, who predicted that 200 million Christians would be taken to heaven Saturday before catastrophe struck the planet, apologized Monday evening for not having the dates "worked out as accurately as I could have." Indian Prime Minister lands in Ethiopia for India-Africa summit

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here today to participate in the second India-Africa summit which aims to widen the ambit of cooperation between the two fast growing economies of the world. Dr Singh, who is accompanied by a high-level delegation, was accorded a ceremonial red carpet welcome at the Bole airport where the Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemarim Desalegne and Indian diplomats were present to receive him. This capital city of Ethiopia, seat of the AU, was colourfully decorated With posters and banners to hail leaders participating in the meet. Leaders of 15 African countries are participating in the meet, being held after three years. Last meet in 2008 was held in New Delhi. Though the discussions at various levels among participating countries started last week, Dr Singh will be co-chairing the meet with AU chairperson Obiang Nguema Mbasogo tomorrow. US preacher Harold Camping gets it wrong again

IF YOU'RE reading this, predictions that the world would end on May 21 were not true. US preacher Harold Camping, 89, who has studied the Bible for 70 years, predicted May 21 as Judgment Day. Mr Camping was raised a Baptist and belongs to the religious Right. He boasts tens of thousands of followers around the world and speaks to them through his Family Radio Network, which has made about $17 million in donations alone. He has argued that the recent spate of natural disasters, including earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand and Haiti, have been leading up to Doomsday. Mr Camping claims to have based his predictions on mathematical calculations. Midroc asked ESFNA to reimburse its sponsorship money for the Atlanta event

According to a credible source within ESFNA (Ethiopian Sport Federation in North America), one of its key sponsors - Midroc-Ethiopia - withdrew its sponsorship contract. Since its foundation in 1984, ESFNA was dedicated “to promote the rich Ethiopian culture and heritage as well as build positive environment within Ethiopian-American communities in North America”. For the accomplishment of this noble mission, individuals & institutions have been supporting this organization by sponsoring its yearly events. Midroc-Ethiopia and its philanthropic Chairman, Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Alamudi, have been generous for the success of past events since 1991. Year-after-year they have been responding in kindness for the assistance requested from ESFNA Board. This year wasn’t unique & they extended their kind hands by donating $240,000.00.According to our source, the issue at hand is the insulting words put forward by few Board members against the very organization which sponsored the event. As shown in a document attached here (1), these Board members labeled the sponsorship money they received from Midroc-Ethiopia as “blood money”. Thus, Midroc-Ethiopia, deservedly, requested ESFNA to reimburse its sponsorship money they donated for the upcoming Atlanta event. According to our source, ESFNA is now expected to reimburse what they arrogantly labeled “blood money”. Failing to do so will drag the organization to court by lawyers hired by Midroc-Ethiopia and its Chairman. No sane individual expects an organization to sponsor an event where its good name is being tarnished by the event organizers. Ethiopian air lines put a bid price on its aircrafts

“The airline is already conducting direct negotiations with several domestic and foreign potential buyers to sell off these aircraft,” said Henok Tefera, an official at Ethiopian, following his presentation of ET’s nine-month report to Parliament’s Transport Affairs Standing Committee on Monday, May 9, 2011.The sale was announced in the report, which indicated the airline registered a net profit of 1.2 billion Br over the past nine months. However, ET’s spending during the same period increased to 17.1 billion Br, 104.6pc more than the 16.4 billion Br the carrier had budgeted, according to the report. The rise in expenditure was attributed by the airline to the spiraling global prices of oil, which took up 39pc (6.7 billion Br) of its total spending. Read more….

UDJ public relations officer Siye Abraha is heading to Harvard University

Siye Abraha, Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJ) public relations officer and former Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF) leader and Ethiopian Defense Minister, acquired a scholarship to study at Harvard University in Boston, U.S.A, the party disclosed.Siye, who joined the UDJ a year and a half ago, was honored at a farewell festivity the party held at the Addis View Hotel last Sunday, May 15. “He is a highly disciplined individual with insight in economic and political matters,” Negassu Gidada, president of the party said at the event.Siye, on his part, pay tribute to his party saying it is one that will “reach to great heights, and with a lot of potential.” He further vowed to serve UDJ and the Ethiopian people upon his return with the knowledge he acquires at Harvard.Harvard University awards this scholarship to senior government officials who have been in office for at least ten years, and are proven competent in their educational background. DV Lottery 2012 winners’ notification stopped.

U.S. Department of States Bureau of Consular Affairs released a notice on their website that all DV 2012 winners notified thru the official website as a selected winner of the Diversity Visa 2012 have been voided. The notice posted today after a days of unavailable service of the http://www.dvlottery.state.gov website. According to the notice the reason of this action is an error of computer programming. 2012 Diversity Visa (DV Lottery) Results announced

Department of State announced that applicants for the 2012 Diversity Visa (DV) Program may now check their application status online. Applicants must enter the confirmation number from their DV application at to determine whether or not their application has been selected for further processing. Applicants will not receive an email or a letter providing this information. Being selected does not guarantee a visa interview or issuance of a Diversity Visa. Entrants must also receive an appointment from the U.S. Department of State for a visa interview and have their application approved by an American Consular Officer. The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa notes that Diversity Visa applicants must meet certain strict requirements to receive a visa. The DV program requires that applicants have a certain level of educational or professional experience, including either 12 years of basic education or at least two years of full-time experience in a qualifying occupation. Under U.S. law, purely vocational education cannot be considered for DV qualification purposes in any country. Due to recent changes in Ethiopia’s Technical and Vocational (TVET) program, the U.S. Embassy cannot accept new TVET program certificates documenting a level of skill, as these programs are entirely vocational and no longer include a basic educational component. further information is here. Ethiopia to Host 2012 World Economic Forum on Africa

Ethiopia will host the next World Economic Forum's Africa meeting a year from now. At a press conference in Cape Town, Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said he is delighted that the WEF - host of a high-level global conference in Davos, Switzerland, each January - has chosen his country for its annual Africa conference. He said all attendees, including journalists, will be welcome.The status of journalists in Ethiopia became an issue at the press conference when a Nairobi-based correspondent said journalists are abused and harassed by the Ethiopian government. He questioned whether opposition parties would be welcome at the conference and asked for guarantees that human rights and freedom of expression would be respected in Ethiopia. The deputy prime minister responded that the questioner's facts were wrong, saying that a distinction must be made between legal opposition and parties affiliated with armed struggle and terrorism. "Ethiopia is an island of stability" in the Horn of Africa, he said, and the rule of law must be observed. Ethiopia is predicted to have one of the world's fastest growing economies over the next decade. Among the reasons for holding its Africa forum in Addis Ababa, said a WEF spokesperson, are that it is a diplomatic hub - including hosting the African Union, it is extending development to the rural poor, with lessons for the rest of Africa, and it has never been colonized. Food prices push Ethiopia inflation to nearly 30 pct

Ethiopia's year-on-year inflation rate rose for a second straight month to 29.5 percent in April, from 25.0 percent a month earlier, driven by a sharp rise in food prices, the statistics agency said on Tuesday."The total price index of cereals in April 2011 has increased by 14.6 percent as compared to the same month last year, which significantly contributed to the rise in the indices of food and the general consumer price index," the Central Statistical Agency said in a statement. Ethiopia has imposed price ceilings on more than a dozen commodities including some essential foodstuffs. Food accounts for just over 57 percent of the basket used to measure the inflation rate. Government officials have accused traders of artificially inflating food prices on the back of higher global prices and a September devaluation of the birr currency ETB=.Ethiopia is grappling with rising inflation like other countries in Africa, including Uganda where spiralling food and fuel prices have led to protests. Press freedom day ended in a walk out over mistrust between government and private medias.

The meeting quickly deteriorated into a fierce argument between private and government media over procedural questions. It ended when many private media representatives walked out. Conference co-organizer Argaw Ashine called the incident "embarrassing” "The problem is mistrust between the media and the government. Ethopian cafe owner arrested in major khat bust

The leafy substance was shipped in boxes labeled "green tea" from the United Kingdom, police said. The source told police that 15 to 20 boxes were delivered three or four times a week. The informant provided cardboard packaging that contained the "green tea" label with a clear plastic bag containing khat residue that had been found in the trash, documents said. The officers learned that the business was about to receive a shipment of khat from two overseas locations in March. Investigators obtained a warrant to open five packages addressed to Shuremu at a U.S. postal facility before the boxes were delivered to the Diradawa cafe. Read more...

Ethiopian Government Slashes Karuturi Global Land Concession by Two-Thirds

Three hundred thousand hectares is a huge area of land. Nobody can manage it,” Esayas Kebede, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s land investment support directorate said on April 29. “Therefore, Karuturi should get a rational and manageable plot of land based on its own capacity and our monitoring and evaluation capacity.” Karuturi Chief Executive Officer Sai Ramakrishna Karuturi said reports claiming the government reduced the concession “are completely baseless.” The company is developing 111,700 hectares of agricultural land, while 200,000 hectares “continues to be with us as part of the concession and will be developed in a phased manner,” he said in an e-mailed statement today. Osama Bin Laden is dead: Obama

Based on statements given by U.S. detainees, intelligence officials have known for years that bin Laden trusted one al-Qaida courier in particular and they believed he might be living with him in hiding. In November, intelligence officials found out where he was living, a huge fortified compound in an affluent suburb of Islamabad. It was surrounded by walls as high as 18 feet high, topped with barbed wire. There were two security gates and no phone or Internet running into the house Intelligence officials believed the $1 million home was custom-built to harbor a major terrorist. CIA experts analyzed whether it could be anyone else, but time and again, they decided it was almost certainly bin Laden. Three adult males were also killed in Sunday's raid, including one of bin Laden's sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden's sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al-Qaida. Muammar Gaddafi son killed by Nato air strike – Libyan government

A Nato air strike in Tripoli has killed the youngest son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, a Libyan government spokesman has said. Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, 29, was killed along with three of Muammar Gaddafi's grandsons, according to reports. The Libyan leader was in the building at the time of the strike, but was unharmed. Several of Gaddafi's friends and relatives were wounded. Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said: "This was a direct operation to assassinate the leader of this country." "The attack resulted in the martyrdom of brother Saif al-Arab Gaddafi and three of the leader's grandchildren," he said."The leader with his wife was there in the house with other friends and relatives. The leader himself is in good health – he wasn't harmed. [Muammar Gaddafi's] wife is also in good health." Nato forces are permitted, under United Nations resolution 1973, passed in March, to use 'all necessary measures' to protect civilians from pro-Gaddafi forces. Ibrahim added: "We think now it is clear to everyone that what is happening in Libya has nothing to do with the protection of civilians. "This is not permitted by international law. Nato does not care to test our promises, the west does not care to test our statements. Their only care is to rob us of our freedom." The one-storey house in a residential neighbourhood in Tripoli reportedly suffered heavy damage. Nato gave no immediate reaction. There was no independent confirmation of the incident.
